Hes so good in those moments, especially when he plays himself.

Sometimes his performances have enough buoyancy to keep the whole joke afloat.

Toward the end, though, the special starts to founder.

Kroll has a mastery of the whole experience.

The first story (childhood karate class) sets the tone.

The second one (restaurant and then car) escalates the experience.

The shame of those experiences and Krolls depression after a particularly brutal breakup are the highlights ofLittle Big Boy.

The special also shares some ofBig Mouths fondness for letting a supernatural figure comment on a characters shame.

Kroll-as-Statham poses more of a writing problem than a performance issue, however.

The idea is fine, and the first few times he shows up are entertaining.

The same is true forLittle Big Boymore generally.

Eventually, yes, of course, it becomes one of the poop jokes.

Then he giggles and his entire body appears to transform into a strange, elfish demon.

he says, cowering behind the stool that has been holding his glass of water.

You cant see me behind this stool!

Hes proud of, mortified by, and delighted with his stupid little pee-pee joke.

Hes an odd little weirdo!

When Kroll pulls it off, the special is a fun demonstration of his whole comedic identity.

It would be much more fun and more memorable than the shrug Kroll offers at the end.
