Oldenburg was born in Stockholm in 1929 but moved to the United States in 1936.

He was educated at Yale University and studied at the Art Institute of Chicago under Paul Wieghardt.

Much of his work was created in collaboration with Coosje van Bruggen, who later became his wife.

She died in 2009.

He will be best remembered for his larger-than-life sculptures of everyday objects.

Oldenburg was renowned for his style, scope, and use of materials.

It was displayed in the Channel Gardens inside Rockefeller Center earlier this year.
