Who better to turn to for under-the-radar comedy recommendations than comedians?
Despite itsfirst episoderaking in over 33 million views on YouTube since its release,Sex Houseremains criminally underrated.
So it had already been out for a little while.
The whole freaking way!
I do remember one line, which almost seems like a throwaway joke.
Its pretty innocuous; part of what I love about it is how it doesnt call attention to itself.
But its from the character Frank (Jesse Dabson), the fish-out-of-water housemate.
Its important that you go to the bathroom.
The toggling between being a sexual predator and then being a dad.
I just thought that was so obscene.
And it was so dryly done.
First, its so funny that its a hammer and not a knife.
And I just really admire how they kept heightening the stakes.
Theyre so high, so fast.
Theyre fighting for their lives, and you have seven more episodes to go.
The show is so cleverly written.
And this cast is perfect.The cast is incredible.
But yeah, back to the cast.
Derek is kind of the viewers avatar.
Hes the one that calls out the bullshit and names the crazy stuff thats going on.
I looked athis IMDbtoday, and come on!
I mean, he works, but Chris Boykin should be a household name.
And that shits from 2011, but it remains the sharpest, funniest satirical stuff out there.
Why didnt someone keep paying them?
One of the guys who wroteSex House, Chris Sartinsky, also wrote one of my favorite short stories.
Its calledFrog Team.Its so funny.
Why do you think they had to stop creating this kind of content?The answer is money.
Because theyre not given money.
It fills me with rage and despair.
Around the timeSex Housewas released, it was common to hear howreality shows were destroying society.
This is from 2012, so reality TV already had a choke hold on culture for a long time.
And they created characters that, as silly and zany as they are, you end up caring about.
Doing that well is really hard.
9/11 happened during that season, and there was an episode where they just watch TV and look scared.
But at the same time, they were participating in that.
The viewer feels an automatic sense of superiority because the cast appears so unintelligent.Yes!Theres a flattening.
Theres a slotting in.
So at first when you meet the characters, they do seem like theyre two dimensional.
Its so incongruous to think of this fake frat boy having a real life with grim, real-world problems.
Why would you recommendSex Houseto those who havent watched it?Do you like to have fun?
Then youre going to fucking loveSex House.
Are you a writer?
Are you interested in sharp, specific comedy writing?
Because the specifics in this are surprising.
Its a tiny detail to bring up here, but clay is a great specific.
And, again, the choice of a hammer for Franks self-castration tool the choices are third-thought.
So, to recap: I think youll like the writing.
I think youll enjoy the story.
And youll love the characters and get invested in their journey.
But it would be such a different show.
What would a satirical take even look like now?The Real Worldfeels so quaint at this point.
