In the first episode, Anya was defined by a generally harsh, sardonic attitude.

Anya may have been sick the longest of the eight, but shes had to develop serious coping mechanisms.
Its delusional to think antioxidants will keep the shadows at bay.
That same brutal realism carries over to other scenarios, too.
Its when Anya receives a visit from Stanton that we get proof of her protectiveness.
Stanton recognizes it when Anya returns an old locket that belonged to her former roommate, Rachel.
She likens Anya to her own late son, who used to drive her insane with his stubbornness.
Julian reminded Stanton of herself, and now Anya does too.
Either way, shes lost a leg as a result, which puts an end to ballet.

But something rewarding comes with showing your honest self, even if you cant admit its you.
Shasta seems warm and genuine, though theres something slightly unsettling about her generosity.
The last bit of horror in the episode comes after Ilonka steals Julia Jaynes patient record from Stantons office.
Just as she separates from Kevin, the hallway around her suddenly becomes … different.
When she wakes up on the hallway floor, shes stunned and horrified.
Most of the episode, though, is more about character than mystery.
Theres something nice aboutThe Midnight Clubs approach, so far, to character development.
As insistent as Anya is on preserving reality, sometimes fiction is the best way to show the truth.

Hes also sweet in agreeing to squeeze Natsukis friend Tristans hand for her.
Unfortunately, this probably means Mark will die horrifically.
I became a bit more aware of some 90s anachronisms this episode.
Kevin says that Ilonka using a library card to break into an office is just so on brand.
And in the final moment of the episode, Ilonka says, What the actual fuck?
Given her general look, age, and proximity to Brightcliffe … Shasta is Julia Jayne, right?
