SeaShantyTok keeps getting betterpic.twitter.com/yWLEHzlPlB

When I woke up last Friday morning, I realized I had several messages.

It was not the first sea shanty Id seen on TikTok.

First hes skeptical of Wellerman and then hes entertained by how much his brother likes it.

As with many of the best TikToks, its the naked, transparent sincerity that really sells the video.

They sound like prehistoric oddities, which is part of the appeal.

Sea shanties are also resiliently uncool.

The shock of getting lit tothatis what we see register on the face of the dubious TikTok brother.

Right now, its not safe to gather in groups.

Maybe its just because Wellerman is a great, boisterous bop of a song in any century.

But I dont think so.

Sea shanties are just a more direct, musically explicit version of that desire.

So on a grand scale, Im really moved by the sudden attention to sea shanties.

And for me, personally, I amthrilledto welcome our new sea-shanty overlords.

There are so many more songs that deserve viral TikTok fame!

Im crossing my fingers for Blow the Man Down.
