What does it mean?
Whats horrifying and funny about it?
I was thinking of a West End play because Im from the theater.
Then Billie said, What if she entered a dance competition?
She had already been saying she wanted to do more dancing in the first season.
As a performer, Suzie is at peace when shes dancing.
Because Im quite online, if something doesnt look real, it really takes me out of it.
Writing the final episode was really difficult, because were following her in real-time onstage and backstage.
It was hard to think of where everyone would be and what would be happening.
The season opens with Suzie in clown make-up, doing this dance thats quite avant-garde for broadcast television.
In aFlashdanceway, its experimental and creative.
The clown stuff came from Billie.
Costume and makeup is very much where she has control in the show.
You realize shes trying to completely disguise her sexuality, because thats what shes punished for in season one.
When youre in your 40s, as we both are now, the number of divorces goes way up.
In your 20s you go to weddings, in your 40s you support through divorces.
That all gets caught up in Suzies hair color too.
Theres the Madonna thing where you reinvent yourself.
Well, its dyed, but its my natural hair color.
Thats something I have said in the past.
There was also Britney Spearss relationship and history with her hair as an inspiration.
Its a cliche, but its significant.
Theres something truthful about that in codependent relationships: They both get something out of it.
Naomi gets a facsimile of control over Suzie.
Thats a dynamic agents and actors have too.
Heres an artistic rendering of that.
But we only ever talk about it in terms of what really makes us laugh.
But I appreciate that theres mischief in the way were nudging at things.
Im weirded out by television shows where people dont talk like they do in real life.
So Im always aiming for that.
Theres so much fluidity in our shots.
I subconsciously wanted to remind them to check their TV.
Its something to watch with your partner or on your own, rather than with the whole family.
That custody battle is something a lot of people go through at Christmas.
It might make people feel weirdly less lonely to see a bit more of that onscreen.
Hes very good at that and surprisingly relaxed and compassionate.
We work so hard on having funny alts.
I love that rigor.
Thats stayed with me.
She says, Im so proud of you, your boundaries!
Suzies devastated, but she does the very female friendship thing of going, but youve done really well!
Its so sad but so funny.
How did you decide that would be the final image?I dont know if Americans will understand that!
It must be quite confusing.
The idea was that at the end of the last episode she has a psychotic break.
You move between whats going on with her internally and whats actually happening externally.
But I thought, I dont know how to end that.
It was thisyoung girl with a blackboard.
Its a familiar image for me and most British people.
It has a playful aggression to it.
