We Own This Cityis not a sequel toThe Wire.

That said, it is impossible to watchWe Own This Citywithout thinking ofThe Wire.
That said,We Own This Citydiffers fromThe Wirein both intention and execution.
There are few, if any, Bunk Morelands or Lester Freamons in this Baltimore.
(Dagmara Dominczyk ofSuccessionplays the lead fed.)
Because of that structure,We Own This City is an extremely procedural procedural.
A big one is Bernthals performance.
An actor with an impressively elastic range, Bernthal infuses Jenkins with distinctly Baltimorean swagger.
His cockiness is what draws his direct reports to him; its also his downfall.
Cant fuck with Superman, he confidently tells a colleague mere moments before hes taken into custody.
Its a high-voltage, Emmy-worthy performance.
Its also not the only strong work in this massive ensemble cast.
His arrogance is quiet until it explodes out of him, making Hersl the scarier figure.
And Charles, himself a Baltimore native, gets his accent just right.
He, too, is an eyeball magnet every time he enters the frame.
Are you people ready to say that out loud?
Arriving 20 years afterThe Wire,We Own This Citypresents more pronounced versions of the same old problems.
